Internal or External Blogging, Which is Better?

Ok, here is a 2009 question for all of those Enterprise 2.0 employees. Which is better for your career, to blog inside your company or outside? Many people would respond to say that you should do both but let's face reality, most of us don't have enough time to do both. Last year, I tried to do both but the majority of the time I found myself copying entries and repeating what I said. Other times, the thought or comment had a little too much inside information to be used on this blog (external to AT&T). This blog became my second choice of communications and you can see from the few entries in November and December that I had almost abandoned this blog. One could argue the short term would be to focus on the inside world but with today's environment, I wonder if it isn't better to focus on the long term. Uncertain, I am blogging more here; at least for awhile.

I don't believe it has to be an either/or question. The great thing about blogs and other interactive content is that it can ebb and flow based on your needs, their needs, your project's needs, etc.

I don't see any problem with you having some weeks, months, or quarters that are content light.

I used to blog internally, now (in a new job) I blog externally. It's difficult to do both. But I also research this area professionally (see my link -- sorry for the plug). A quick thought to address your excellent question...

When you blog you invite response and develop influence. For most employees in a company that offers opportunities, they will want to converse internally to develop reputation, opportunities and conversations that are work related.

If you read the writing on the wall and see your internal growth opportunities dry up, external blogging begins to look more attractive.

I'd consider this: who do you want to engage in conversation? And where are the conversations you are involved in taking place now?
