Web 2.0 Electronic Identity

It doesn't seem that long ago when personal web sites could be created to represent ones area of interest, accomplishments, or even services. This was a giant leap from the traditional resume or CV which had to be sent with email. I have had http://www.rtodd.com for almost eight years now. I have truly learned a lot about usability, search engine optimization, and personal branding. However, it dawned on me while I was putting together a presentation that the world has once again changed. While the personal web site is still a very important medium the Web 2.0 technologies bring another dimension to the game. We now have the ability to create professional profiles on sites like LinkedIn, personal portfolios on FaceBook, and images on Flickr. Our publications can be found in an endless array of locations like ACM, IEE, or Amazon. We also have out blogs that are picked up by RSS, search engines, and site aggregators. In other words, my brand is an assembly of, to quote David Weinberger, small pieces loosely joined. It's the accumulations of these referenced trademarks that create my professional brand. Wow, that’s a powerful environment for communicating your value add to the world.
