Starting to get LinkedIn

A couple of months ago, I was cleaning out the desk at home and came across an interesting tool we used to stay connected at work. It was the departmental phone list that was printed off in 5pt text and reduced to a fold up that could easily fit into your wallet. If I remember correctly, we used the copier to perform this miracle of reduction. The list not only folded up, it was also lamented. As I kept digging, I found two more of these cards from my days at Coca-Cola and Georgia Pacific. Then it dawned on me that we don't create these types of communication cards anymore since everything has gone digital. The replacement internally may be professional profiles, email, or department intranets but the outside world depends on services like LinkedIn. I have been getting more aggressive with my network over the past month simply to ensure what happened in the past doesn't happen again. I also save every business card exchanged over the past 20 years and assuming they were on LinkedIn, I sent them an invitation. I also included my current and past co-workers, co-authors, and people interested in the same topics that I research. That’s what networking is all about, staying in touch.

Hi Todd,

I agree, there is no better way of staying in touch with your current co-workers and collegues than getting them in LinkedIn. Not only do you benefit now, by being aware of their expertise. Also after carreer switches and corporate you easily stay in touch.
