Serious Business: Web 2.0 goes Corporate

The Economist Intelligence Unit has released a report entitled “Serious Business: Web 2.0 goes Corporate”. The research polled 406 senior executives from around the world on the impact of Web 2.0 on their businesses. According to the survey:

In fact, according to our survey, 31% of companies think that use of the web as a platform for sharing and collaboration will affect all parts of their business. Why are large corporations interested in what many see as no more than the latest dot-com fad? The answer is growth and profitability. Almost fourfifths of executives surveyed see the sharing and collaboration aspects of Web 2.0 as an opportunity to increase their company’s revenue and/or margins.
The article provides some excellent work on both cost savings and revenue generating strategies. In fact, the article says that 38% of companies expect to use Web 2.0 tools to boost revenue through customer acquisition. Many of the examples have been published but the article is well worth a read. In fact, I would even forward a copy to your senior leadership. Let them know what their peers are doing.

I have studied and in the process of releasing a book about globalization and one of the things that I have been tracking on a daily basis is the discussion of how Web 2.0 is going to impact companies. The last month of so, it looks like people are really getting pretty agressive and even John Dvorak from PCmagazine concluded that it a bubble that is going to break soon... it remains to be seen.

It's customary to acknowledge your source for new information, and also not to hotlink to files - for two reasons:

1) A lot of downloads could crash my server
2) If I delete the file, your link is broken

I'm all for sharing, but please don't hotlink to files I have posted. It will only end in tears!

I have approved Ms. Fox comment for a couple of reasons. First, the content was acknowledged directly in the opening sentence as well as the accompanying link. I could have easily copied the content from the PDF or uploaded the document to my own server. Not sure, why you would post research information so that people can access it but then complain when someone helps promote it. Some organizations have a long way to go in this new environment. Second, I will remove the link so Ms. Fox doesn’t have a direct link which would actually improve her search engine results.
