Act Now, Mass Adoption is Coming

Remember the old days when people were selling domain names for millions of dollars? How much did http://www.cookies.com go for? I actually sold one for $2,500; not bad for a $20.00 investment. While domains may not be as critical as they were before Google, they still play an important role on the Intranet.

Since your organization is rolling out Social Software, now is the time to grab those great Weblog names. In most cases, there can only be one blog with the title “Enterprise 2.0”. Anyone else wanting to blog on that topic will need special permission or create their own like “Almost Enterprise 2.0”. Once you grab the topical domain, it’s yours to lose. You now have a responsibility for the content around the topic and you must ensure you contribute every day to the body of knowledge. So go ahead before your Social Software take off and grab the SOA, EAI, JavaProgramming, or the Collaboration Weblog. Establish your ownership and subject matter experience before the masses move in.

Now in a wiki environment, one can argue that this isn’t as critical since anyone can edit and update the content. True, but that means the “Modified By” may contain your name but the “Created By” will always be reserved for the first mover. In addition, there is some form of unwritten social order of ownership. I have already seen this with the two pages we grabbed “Enterprise 2.0” and “SharePoint”. People have asked us if that can add content since they see us as the leaders in this area.

Don’t grab too many since you really can only contribute so much of your time and energy. Pick a couple and get your team involved since this may become the main information and communication channel for the organization.
