Fifteen Things an Enterprise 2.0 Leader Must Do

1. Show Up. Leaders show up and engage the program. True leaders don’t sit 1,000 miles away issuing commands without understand the impact on the frontlines. Ivory tower leadership is dead.

2. Communicate and Create an Open Organization. The essence of Enterprise 2.0 is the creation of an open organization where communications and value can emerge from any person up or down the food chain. You can’t lead this type of program by the old adage of “do what I say, not as I do”; everyone is watching.

3. Develop the Strategy/Vision. If not the leader then who? You are not going to find a strategy on the Internet. You can’t hire some outside resource that will pull out a vision from their hip pocket. This is the leadership job #1. Define your vision, communicate, and go forth and execute. Time is against you, and ready, aim, fire won’t work. It’s Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire.

4. Willing to be Fired. Are you willing to be fired on what you believe in? Are you willing to take a stand against the corporate culture, against the old guard, and go into a David versus Goliath battle? There are no other options, you must burn the ship, you will either win or die. Only to emerge again.

5. Evangelize Web 2.0. Who do you think will be leading the charge? Are you going to take one of your mini managers and assign this task? Or, better yet; are you going to take one of your techies and ask them to do this on the side?

6. Passion. Passion moves mountains. Leaders that have or develop passion for their area will inspire others to follow. Passion is what will drive you to work 15 hours a day and love every minute of it.

7. Responsible. Yes, the “R” word. You are responsible for the success and failure of the Enterprise 2.0 program. No, it’s not the infrastructure that failed or the software development that didn’t deliver. You failed! While the whole team gets to spoils of victory, only you will pay the price of failure. Don’t like it, welcome to Leadership 101.

8. Hold People Accountable. Damn it, hold people accountable to the plan and what they say they are going to do. Your going to be held responsible so you need to hold others feet to the fire.

9. Focus. You can’t be great at everything. Your team can’t excel at everything. Pick out a few things that really matter and focus. Southwest focuses on being the lowest cost provider. We focus on collaborative growth.

10. Teach Constantly. Not everyone understands the transparent corporation. You have to educate them today, tomorrow and next month. Simplify the message and communicate often.

11. Common Enemy. While this isn’t a popular way of thinking where would Apple be with Microsoft, Jack without Arnold, Magic without Bird. Who or what will you assemble your team to rise above and beat to a pulp.

12. Celebrate. Celebrate your victories, your new products, new services, and big customers. Do something different and make the celebration memorable.

13. Serving. The ultimate goal in life is to serve others. Who will you serve? Customer? Staff? When you are serving others, the program means something.

14. Talent. Do you seek talent? Could you recognize talent if it hit you over your head? If a sixteen year old walked into your office would you see insight or a delinquent? If an artist walked into the office would you see your next designer? Talent is one of the most important jobs of the leader. Make a priority!

15. Leader is about you. We are all leaders and with this new media, we all can take on the persona of leadership. Leadership, insight, and strategy is no longer locked up in the top floor of the corporation. Leadership is found in every job and every person. We must move beyond the hierarchal structure that has kept us held in check. The corporation needs agility, speed, and delivery and that means you.

Great list! Especially agree with points 5 and 6. If someone has a passion they will do E2 on top of their job, regardless of the cost.
