DAMA Conference

Wow, what a week at the 2005 DAMA International Symposium and Wilshire Metadata Conference. I was very excited to see sessions on Information Architecture, Dublin Core Metadata Standard, Semantic Web, Enterprise Architecture, Knowledge Management and the Academic track provided some great research. I cant think of any other conference where the diversity of topics is covered at the level of detail as it was here.

Oh, so how did my sessions go? Got some great reviews with the only exception coming from the vendors. Things that make you go hmmmmm. Maybe I am letting too many secrets out and people are getting nervous. My main message was simple this; Metadata should be run as any other business venture. Long term success comes from great products, value-add services, marketing, and the customer experience.

TDWI World Conference

At the end of my Keynote Speech for the TDWI World Conference in Baltimore a young lady approached the stage asking if our conversation at the DAMA International Symposium and Wilshire Metadata Conference will include unstructured best practices. While not directly, clearly the message of universal application of metadata best practices has taken hold. Along with the post below, the conversation simply affirms my believe that metadata will converge as the leading technology or perhaps the over arching umbrella that brings together the principles of design, architecture, and application of information.

Information Architecture

How does Metadata relate to Information Architecture? I would argue that they overlap at about 80% of the functions and requirements. Many people pigeon hole metadata as a database technology while other do the same with IA as a web only technology. Both assumptions are wrong and out dated. Some folks do understand this convergence and the impact within the organization and thats a positive sign.

Enterprise Metadata Blog
Enterprise Metadata Blog by R. Todd Stephens
Todd has got a nice mix of enterprise metadata from both theory and practice since he did his dissertation at the same as working at Bell South on real enterprise metadata needs. He has presented at several conferences involving both the more techie stuff at DAMA International as well as Dublin Core and other related conferences. I believe this intesection of the techie/practical world and the theory/academic world gives us a good mix of the challenges we face at managing information systems. He's definitely in the mix of things I'd like to be involved. It will be interesting to see where his blog goes in sharing his experiences. Many of his previous presentations and handouts are also available on his site.
